Visitation Carmignano (after Pontormo)

£360.00

oil on panel

25.3 x 19.7 cm

size in frame: 30 x 25 x 3.5 cm

This is an oil sketch copy of a work by Italian painter Jacopo Carucci (or Carrucci, usually known as Jacopo Pontormo).

The painting depicts the meeting of Mary and her cousin Elizabeth, who both pregnant, symbolically prefigure the future interaction of their sons, Jesus and John the Baptist. The Carmignano Visitation was painted around 1528 - 1530. Now in the propositura dei Santi Michele e Francesco in Carmignano, Italy, and unmentioned in Vasari’s Lives of the Artists, the painting is usually attributed to the years just after Pontormo’s famous work on the Capponi Chapel in Florence.

In my work, I am heavily inspired by the work of Pontormo. Every time I begin a new work I go back and study his paintings. This oil sketch was made when I was in the research phase of my current project Miniature.
