Visitation (After Pontormo)

£360.00

oil on board

35.6 x 27 cm

size in frame: 39 x 30.6 x 3.2

Frame hand-made and painted by me in my Norfolk studio

This is an oil sketch copy of a work by Italian painter Jacopo Carucci (or Carrucci, usually known as Jacopo Pontormo). The fresco which can be seen in the church of Santissima Annunciata in Florence, was painted by Pontormo between 1514 and 1516.

The painting depicts the meeting of Mary and her cousin Elizabeth, both pregnant, symbolically prefiguring the future interaction of theirs sons, Jesus and John the Baptist. Pontormo shows himself as under the spell of Raphel, arranging his composition on a set of low steps, similar to Raphael’s School of Athens. There is an element of refinement and elegance in this work of Pontormo, both in the poses of the figures and in the creation of the architectural backdrop.

In my work, I am heavily inspired by the work of Pontormo. Every time I begin a new work I go back and study his paintings. This oil sketch was made when I was in the research phase of my current project Miniature.
