size in frame: 39.1 x 30.6 x 3.2 cm

Frame hand-made and painted by me in my Norfolk studio

This is an oil sketch copy of a work by Italian painter Jacopo Carucci [1494 - 1557] (or Carrucci, usually known as Jacopo Pontormo). Christ before Pilate was part of a fresco cycle Pontormo produced for the cloister of the Certosa at Galuzzo, a Carthusian monastery, just outside Florence between 1523 and 1525. Due to their exposure to the elements, they have survived in poor condition. For these frescoes, Pontormo in part relied on German prints, including those of Albrecht Durer, for some compositional suggestions, to produce paintings which operate within complex spatial and proportional systems. The central figure of Christ, shown in profile, is thin, frail and elongated. He is placed in opposition to the robust youth in the distance, higher on the vertical axis and in a much smaller scale.

In my work, I am heavily inspired by the work of Pontormo. Every time I begin a new work I go back and study his paintings. This oil sketch was made when I was in the research phase of my current project Miniature.
